Help patients see it before they decide.

JawSim is a patient communication aid for maxillofacial and orthodontic clinics. In the first consultations, when a patient is still deciding, give them a rough illustrative preview of what the proposed jaw or chin surgery actually means: how the planned movement would change their face, on their own photos, from every angle.

It works with the clinical photographs your practice already takes - or, just as well, with photos from any phone during the visit.

Illustrative aid only. Never a medical prediction, never an outcome guarantee. Every generated image carries a burnt-in disclaimer.

No card required, up to 5 cases. Or have us walk you through one of your own cases live.

How it works

Example input photos: front and profile consult photographs
1 · Photograph

Front, profile and three-quarter views. Use the professional photo set your clinic already takes, or take the photos with any phone. No special camera, no calibration.

The adjustment interface: live face preview above anatomy sliders
2 · Adjust

Set the planned movement with sliders that follow the surgical anatomy: Le Fort I, BSSO, occlusal plane rotation, genioplasty. The preview updates live. Controls are deliberately unitless - the tool shows direction and relative magnitude, not a millimetre promise.

The result shown to the patient: before photo next to the illustrative estimated after
3 · Show

Walk the patient through an illustrative before / after on every angle, play a smooth morph, and print a case sheet to take home.

Common questions from clinics

Is this a prediction of the surgical outcome?

No, and it is designed not to be read as one. JawSim applies a generic soft-tissue response over population-average ratios. It illustrates the direction and the rough magnitude of a planned movement on that patient's own face. Every generated image carries a burnt-in disclaimer, and the controls are deliberately unitless. My own case, the preview next to a photograph taken five weeks after surgery, is on the About page.

Does it replace our virtual surgical planning?

No. It reads no CBCT, performs no cephalometric analysis and produces no splints or cutting guides. Dolphin, IPS CaseDesigner and ProPlan answer a different question at a later stage. JawSim is for the first consultation, before the records exist and before the patient has committed - the stage where there is currently nothing to show.

What photographs does it need?

Front, profile and three-quarter views. The standardised clinical series a practice already takes works well; so do photos taken on a phone during the visit. No calibration, no special camera, no markers.

Which movements can it show?

Le Fort I advancement, setback, impaction and down-graft; segmental expansion; BSSO advancement and setback; occlusal plane rotation with a selectable pivot; occlusal cant and midline yaw correction; genioplasty in the anteroposterior, vertical and transverse directions; alar base and nasal tip response.

How long does a case take?

A few minutes from upload to a first image, and the adjustment preview is live after that. It is meant to be usable inside a consultation rather than as a separate planning session.

Where is patient data held?

In the EU. The clinic remains the data controller and a data processing agreement is included; uploaded photos are checked by a third-party vision model to detect the head angle, disclosed in the DPA. Cases and patients can be deleted at any time, and automatic retention limits can be set per clinic.

Why this exists

JawSim was written by an orthognathic patient, not a software company. At my introductory consultation in Lisbon the plan was explained well: a bimaxillary advancement with a counter-clockwise rotation of the occlusal plane and a genioplasty. I understood every word and could not picture my face. So I sketched it myself, from one photograph. The sketch was good enough that I would have decided on it, and that is when I decided to build it for clinics.

The surgery has since happened. On the About page the sketch sits next to my real profile five weeks on: right on the direction and rough size, wrong on the detail, which is all a first-consultation sketch has to be.

Data & trust

  • EU hosted. Photos and case data are stored and processed in the EU.
  • GDPR. Data processing agreement included; the clinic remains the data controller.
  • Photo analysis sub-processing: uploaded photos are checked by a third-party vision model to detect the head angle; disclosed in the DPA.
  • Deletion on request. Cases can be deleted by the clinic at any time.
Visualization aid, NOT a medical prediction. JawSim uses illustrative population-average norms and a generic soft-tissue response. It is not a surgical plan, not a simulation of an individual outcome, and not a substitute for clinical judgement. Every generated image carries a burnt-in disclaimer.
